Conclusion.

For my last post on Kristen Wiig I decided to chose a video from Saturday Night Live. I think it is appropriate to show her roots and where her fame began. This video’s was one of her first reoccurring roles on the show. When a new member  joins the SNL family it is no small feat to gain your own 5 minute sketch that relies heavily on your individual talent. This is precisely what happened with Kristen Wiig’s character “Target Lady“. This video shows an over enthusiastic employee at Target who is nothing short of obsessed. I believe that one of the reason’s that this character was so successful and not to mention hilarious is because we all have a small obsession with Target. Gawker did an outline of Kristen Wiig’s Target character describing her character as, “The most enthusiastic check out lady in the whole world, terrorizes the customers by announcing their products and trying to tell them about her life”. Gawker continues by saying she is “inappropriately awesome, and we swear to god we met someone just like her at Target once.” I could not have said it better myself.

Kristen Wiig’s simple role of a Target sales associate has contributed to her success. In Elle Magazine Wiig admits to doing the target lady as her audition for Sautrday Night Live. “It’s a five-minute monologue with various characters and impressions—I did the Target Lady, Aunt Linda” says Wiig. The over the top and eccentricity of this one character is reflected in every other performance that Wiig gives.

With her over the top characters on SNL and her incredibly successful role in Bridesmaids, Kristen Wiig is well on her way to making a substantial foot print in Hollywood. She has helped women break into comedy as leading ladies and no longer as the supporting roles. There is no comedic boundary that will stop her and I look forward to her upcoming projects that will continue to push the envelope.

FANtasies

Although Bridesmaids was seen as Kristen Wiig’s breakout performance she has had a fan base long before her silver screen debut. Wiig started off as cast member on SNL in 2006 and immediately gained a fan base. Kristen was immediately recognized for her versatility and her character development. I chose one fan video in particular because of the nature of the video. He impersonates Wiig from one of her reoccurring characters on Saturday Night Live and does so with just his voice. You can see the dedication of the fan through his ability to recite the skit with no script or stumble.

Here is the original video of Kristen Wiig on SNL:

And here is the fan video of that same skit:

Fan Video

Not only did I choose this video for the comedic value but because of how it is presented to us, the viewer. Kristen Wiig’s character in the skit is very over the top and feminine. Therefore, when we see that a shirtless man is acting out this video and it is unexpected. The impersonator is clearly an in shape young male, who is acting the part of an over the top middle-aged woman. This contrast of character versus impersonator adds to the comedic value of the video. I think it is only appropriate that a fan of Kristen Wiig shows his dedication to her work through a funny video of his own.

Let’s Get Physical

The performance I chose of Kristen Wiig is from her motion picture Bridesmaids. The reason I chose this video clip was because I felt it best captured what we love about Kristen and comedy in general. This airplane scene is brilliant in every sense. Flying is a tense situation for almost every traveler therefore, by creating a scene that addresses all the issues of flying in a relatable way is beyond brilliant and compelling.

Bridesmaids was a nationwide hit that was enjoyed by every demographic. There is something so refreshing about seeing a raunchy comedy revolved around the perspective of a woman. Kristen Wiig not only gave an incredibly hilarious performance but she also is the mastermind behind the script of Bridesmaids. She wrote herself a daring and refreshingly gross lead role with equally grotesque yet witty supporting characters.

In this piece of video I chose , it is clear that Kristen Wiig uses her body to further push her comedic angle. She shares this idea of physical comedy with the likes of Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett. Both are famous for not only pushing boundaries in comedy but also using their bodies to do so. It is rare that woman can successfully use their body and be funny. I think this is one of the most unusual and special traits that Kristen embodies and it is often looked over. I strongly believe that this is one of reasons that we all fell in love with Kristen on screen.

Kristen’s Close Up

I chose this close-up picture because I believe it     embodies what we all love about Kristen Wiig.    This is not your typical photograph of a female celebrity these days. Females are commonly seen in a provocative and usually sexually explicit way. The sex appeal of women in television and film is part of the job. However, this is not the case for Kristen Wiig. Strong female comics have begun to steal the spotlight they deserve. This close-up photograph of Kristen Wiig embodies what we love and embrace about her. She isn’t afraid to flash a face that may not capture her at her best.

The background of the photograph gives us the fun piece of Kristen Wiig that America fell in love with. The mounds of costumes make it look as if she is in the wardrobe department on the set of SNL. This playful atmosphere and funny facial expression is balanced out by her professionally done make-up and hair and her gaudy, girly necklace.

I think one of the most successful pieces of this photograph is the misspelling of her name. This identifies that she is up and coming and that people may not recognize her but she has no qualms with correcting them. After her breakout screenwriting and performance of Bridesmaids you can be assured that her name will no longer be misspelled. Wiig has broken the barrier of funny and beauty. She embodies the whole package.
